The Aquaculture and Shrimp Farming project was ....
 
...started in January 2008 with a total cost of Rs. 1997.303 million and was implemented all over the Pakistan through Fisheries Development Board. Scope of the project was as under:
  1. Establishment of model fish / shrimp farms                                                                   ---- 12 Nos
  2. Establishment and rehabilitation / augmentation of hatcheries                                         ----09 Nos
  3. Introduction and promotion of cageculture fish farming                                                  ----05 Nos
  4. Setting up of State of the Art fish markets                                                                   ----06 Nos
  5. Support up to 20% to private sector farmers for:
    • Shrimp Farms
    • Cages
    • Trout
    • Fish yearling production ponds for cageculture
  6. Provision of training to community shrimp and fish farmers                                              ----2100 Nos
  7. Establishment of private sector led Fisheries Development Board.
  8. Provision of technical backstopping, research and development to fisheries community.
  9. Development of Master Plan for coastal, inland and marine aquaculture.
  10. Strengthening of Fisheries Management Wing of the Ministry.

In the wake of 18th Amendment in Constitution of Pakistan, the project has been closed before its completion. Fisheries Development Board has completed the targets set for the project during the last three years under the supervision of Board. Two hatcheries in Sindh has been renovated/augmented, one hatchery is completed in D.I Khan and one shrimp hatchery at Balochistan is near to completion as funds were transferred to Govt. of Balochistan. Subsequently, FDB has completed revitalization of Mirpur Hatchery at AJK which remained abundend for last 15 years.

Moreover, five cage farms were established at Mangla Dam, Merani Dam, Keenjhar Lake, Khanpur Dam and Dhurabi Dam wherein study was conducted to promote and awareness purpose of cage farming in private sector. Fisheries Development Board had also arranged workshops, seminars and trainings for awareness and training of public sector, private fish farmers and entrepreneurs in the various sectors of fisheries such as cage fish farming, shrimp farming, etc as given below:

  1. Nineteen (19) people were intensively trained in the field of shrimp hatchery management in 2009.
  2. A seminar was held on Potential of Aquaculture and Shrimp Farming in Sindh
  3. A workshop was conducted at Mirpur in 2009 on Fresh Water Cage Culture Fish Farming
  4. At Karachi, a workshop was held on Advancement in Aquaculture Technologies in Pakistan perspective.
  5. An International Workshop was held on Organic Aquaculture with collaboration of FAO and INFOFISH in 2009.
  6. A one day seminar was held at Karachi on Policy and Strategy for Fisheries Development in new Decade 2011-2020
  7. A Seminar on Save our Seas was held at Karachi with the collaboration of PAKFEA.
  8. A co-sponsored training was held on Small Scale Fish Handling for fishermen of Gaddani.
  9. A training workshop was held at Mirpur, AJK on Cage Fish Farming for master trainers including public and private fish farmers.

Fisheries Development Board in the history of Pakistan has been successful in coordination with Wetlands to establish the first National Park for conservation of Mahseer fish at Poonch River, Mirpur, AJK. In this context, a number of activities have been carried out including demarcation of water body using Buoys, patrolling and watch & ward to control catch and theft, awareness workshops for community, etc.

A project for Strengthening of Facilities of Aquaculture and Fisheries of NARC has been funded out under the Research and Development Component. Also small scale fish feed mill was established for production of pelleted and non pelleted fish feed.

Currently, a research oriented project is underway in which the Fisheries Development Board has been provided high value fish species (Pangasius and Tilapia) by the Government of Thailand as a donation. Initially, a sum of 100,000 fish seed has been imported and stocked in Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan keeping the environmental effects on fish. The fish seed has been given to private fish farmers in consultation of concerned Fisheries Departments at each province. In this regard, services of Dr. Naeem Narejo from Jamshero University and Dr. Muhammad Naeem from BZU, Multan has been acquired to conduct study on these species during the winter season. The first phase of this project would be completed in March 2012.
